Many Chicagoland children dream of going to the legendary Wrigley Field to see their beloved Cubbies play. Ryan and Jenny have helped make this dream come true for hundreds of local children through “Dempster’s Dugout”. In 2006, Ryan and Jenny established “Dempster’s Dugout”, a charitable ticket program that benefits local social service agencies that assist low-income children. Through this program, Ryan and Jenny host approximately 500 children each season at select Chicago Cubs games in conjunction with Cubs Cares, a charitable beneficiary of the Chicago Cubs.
The program not only allows the children the opportunity to see their home team play but includes behind-the-scenes extras that make for a truly memorable outing. Prior to the start of the game, the children are given an escorted tour of the field where they are able to get a bird’s eye view of the famous ivy-covered outfield walls and watch Ryan and his teammates take batting practice. After batting practice, the children get to meet Ryan or one of his teammates while they sign autographs. The fun continues as the children are given “Cubs Dollars” to spend on food or a Cub’s souvenir to commemorate their special day.
Since it’s inception in 2006, Dempster’s Dugout has hosted children from nearly 30 different local service agencies. Just a few of the past recipients of the program include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago, Union League Boys & Girls Clubs RBI Program, Inner City Little League, Corner Stone Shelter for Boys, GoGirlGo!, and Chicago Uptown Ministry. In 2009 Ryan and Jenny added the DiGeorge Syndrome Support Group from Children’s Memorial Hospital as a way to give those families affected by the syndrome the chance to meet and socialize with other families who face the same daily struggles and issues they themselves face. They also invited the nurses from the Natal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago to thank them for their help and support.
Ryan and Jenny love hosting and meeting the children and families who benefit from the Dempster’s Dugout program. They know that it’s not just about winning or losing the game but sometimes just about being together and creating some special memories.
